RUNWATER DOWNPIPE CALCULATION IN MALAYSIA

Today I have a task of calculating number of RWDP to be proposed for my project.  So first thing firts, I must use the correct way because it's very important to have a sufficient RWDP in order to prevent a flood.

Parts of a UPVC downpipe

GUTTER CAPACITY CALCULATION
Input roof catchment size for one outlet (m) 8.4m width 34.3m lenght
Roof Catchment Area(m2) 289m2
8.4m x 34.3m = 288.12m2 per RWDP

Rainfall Intensity (mm/hr) (Malaysia) 325mm/hr
Total cross section area of gutter 65790mm2

Gutter width based on structural design/site condition 300mm

Min Average gutter height including 25mm freeboard 245mm
(between lowest & highest point)

Gutter gradient 1:200
Minimum gutter girth (mm) For 1.0mm thick Zincalume gutter 814mm
Minimum gutter size = 300mm(W) x 300mm (D) 900mm

CAPACITY FOR EAVE GUTTER
Downpipe Capacity for Eave Gutter
Cross section of RWDP for EAVE gutter = 95mm2 x Roof Catchment
Based on above roof catchment,
The requierd cross section of RWDP 27455 mm2
Min Recommendation diameter for RWDP = 200mm

CAPACITY FOR INTERNAL BOX GUTTER
Cross section of RWDP for Internal Box gutter = 95mm2 x Roof Catchment
Based on above roof catchment,
The requierd cross section of RWDP 27455 mm2
Min Recommendation diameter for RWDP = 200mm

Components in a standard RWDP system

A cross-section showing the location of RWDP at any building.

LET'S WORK TOGETHER

Working with an Architect should be a positive and fun experience. I believe that everyone should have access to the types of services I provide:
1. Planning - A stage where you realize you need to own your own home. Buy a piece of     land and build your own dream home or buy an existing property and turn it into your wonder-home by adding your own values to it.
2. Conceptual Design - Involves the creative and innovative ideas how to layout your desired home, renovation or interior design. Estimated cost must come into picture at this stage so that you have all your dreams come true.
3. Authority Submission - This would involve local council if it is a new building or alteration to existing structure. There is a building regulation which we suppose to comply with.
4. Let's Build It - Time to put all our ideas on to the ground. We supervise, monitor and manage from A to Z so that the construction process is smooth.
5. Completion - Finishing it all, comply with all authority's requirements, resembling the original ideas where small deviation is acceptable and the most important is to stick to the budget.
It is my goal to have every client feel that they are receiving the best possible service and value during our time together. It’s a pretty simple concept to understand but we go to great lengths to make sure that the service we provide is exceptional, the designs we create imaginative and resourceful, and the process from start to finish rewarding and enjoyable.
Despite the work I showcase here, there is a myriad of projects of all sizes and budgets that I will work on, I like to work with great people. If you think that you might want to work with me, or even if you have a question on the process, or what is involved when working with architects,  please feel free to contact me through my email

WORK WORK WORK

Pardon me for not being able to write yesterday, Wednesday 14th October 2105 as it was a public holiday here in Malaysia called Awal Muharram ( A new year in Islamic Calendar). I will talk about it in my other posting.

Well, today I started off my work with writing CCM minutes.
Why I didn't finish it on Tuesday?...my meeting ended at 5.15pm, I was full with white coffee which I had 3 cups of it. An excuse huh! Owh..I had stomach-ache, I didn't know what went wrong but I visited the toilet 2 times. Not to mention whrn I got back home, I still suffered from a minor diarrhea. Food poisoning?...IDK.

Isn't writing minutes is a secretary or a clerk's work? In my case, it is not. I have to write my own minutes. of course it also depends on the work place. I used to work in an office that provided me with an assistant to do my minutes. I only needed to draft it and the assistant would typed it for me. Hooray!...

My work on my cubicle

I must admit that I'm not an excellent minutes-writer but I'm learning. There are lots of guide in writing minutes if you just google for it. As of me, I learnt from experienced personnel at my work place.

Some tips shared by an expert. Source: Slideshare.net.

Ok guys, I must finish my minutes first. See you around!

A LIFE IN A DAY OF AN ARCHITECT

Everyday I perform a different task in my job:
THINKING, PROCESSING, EVALUATING, REVIEWING, COORDINATING, PARTICIPATING, INSTRUCTING, ISSUING and the most popular, MEETING.
What goes after that?....MINUTING.

Take today for instance, I started off my day with reviewing the design drawing done by my team member, something to do with fire authority, which we call FIRE COMPARTMENTATION DRAWING...which look something like this:

The compartmentation needed to prevent the fire spreading from one space to another

The elements of structure in Basement floor must be 4-hour fire rated, the compartment wall and fire-rated roller shutter must be 2-hour fire rated and fire door is 1-hour fire rated. The design must take into consideration of all safety aspects such as dead end limit, travel distance, hose reel installation, number of staircase, width of escape route, final exit floor and so on so forth. WOW...really comprehensive huh!

Luckily, we have all contained in a special book called Uniform Building By Law (UBBL) and also Guide To Fire Protection in Malaysia...which we call 'red book'.

I reviewed the floor plans using AutoCAD LT 2014, a special software to produce drawings that can be edited. Anything that I feel like ADDING, RELOCATING, REMOVING, ELIMINATING, I can do it easier and faster, but now I don't do that kind of stuffs anymore.

In the evening, I got meeting with the Client and all consultants involved in the project. We call it Client/Consultants Coordination Meeting,CCM. I was the chairman for the meeting.
It was a good meeting with a cup of white coffee

After the meeting, I walked near the window and saw this...

They said the lizard is the company's logo....COOL eh!

The haze condition in Kuala Lumpur still not so good, whatever the reading is, you can judge from this photo which was taken at Level 29.

ARCHITECTS ARE SEXIEST.

Well, the sentence did not come from my mouth..LOL..

MY HOBBIES

This is the most common question asked when we were little, when filling up any forms be it to enter competition, school related activities and so on.

I would fill my hobbies as :

reading,
                             watching tv,
                                                                   listening to radio and
                                                                                                            do paintings.

Still I couldn't locate my painting works...sigh..

MY STORY....NOT HIS STORY...

My first ambition (when I was standard 1) was to be a soldier, just like my late father   (Al-Fatihah upon him - this is an Islamic way to remember the deceased by reciting the surah from the Quran).

I couldn't imagine I ever dream of becoming one!

Later when I was in standard 4, I thought of becoming a Doctor. Yeah..cool career I guess, people would call you...Doc!...he3..

Emm..more like it..but could I?..

Ok, my idea of becoming a Doctor came after my 3rd elder brother pursuing his study in Medicine in University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. I'd always dreaming of wearing white jacket and carry a stethoscope with me...ha!..ha!..ha!..even sweeter, ther was a TV series about a life of a genius teenager doctor...Doogie Howser MD. That was my inspiration!

Is there anybody was so inspired by this TV series that turn them into a real doctor?

Along the way, I knew it was a tough studying years and would be tough working years ahead waiting for a doctor. Hmm...i had a split mind, after witnessing my brother's life as a MEDIC student. He once told me, "if you want a more relaxed career but still in the field of healthcare, why don't you consider DENTISTRY". It was a no-stranger to me hearing that word. After that, the word sounds like a music to my ear...lalala...lalalala..

All I could imagine of being a Dentist!!

My hobby is sketching and painting. I love to draw, that was how I had an idea of becoming an Architect. Actually it was my 4th elder brother who advised me on what career to chose for my future.

I still remember after getting my SPM result, (SPM = Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia/Malaysian Certificate of Education..taken at the age of 17-year-old) I got the call from him from the US (my brother was studying Mechanical Engineering at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor). I told him I wanted to take dentistry.. and guess what he said?.."Dentistry is more suitable for woman...go and challenge yourself"..Ha3..I never expected that kind of reaction. Suddenly my dream and song of dentistry vanished..gone with the wind...

Then he said..."since you love so much to draw and good at it, why don't you take architecture, it has to do with sketching and drawing things"...

Since the day..the word architecture filled my head and it was my first choice of learning course when I filled up an entry form to the university.

Did I make the right choice???

NEVER TOO LATE TO START SOMETHING...

Today's mark the 13th year of my services as an architect, here in my beloved town and country, wonderful Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Location of Malaysia.

Regarding creating this blog, which I got a sudden inspiration..(just with a blink of an eye..).. poof!...I have no answer if you ask me WHY NOW?

Well, as the headline for the very first of my post (this is not my first time writing in blogs..ehem2!)..it's never too late to start on something.

Anyone who has no idea what is an Architect, who is an Architect, what job they do and what kind of life they live...start befriend with one, then you'll know the truth.

Pardon me if I use a lot of images, pictures, photos in my writing...I just love those right-brain stimulation. What kind of life would we live if there's no colorful pictures around us?
